Re: Hops at Flame Out

I kinda do what NobbyIPA suggests, however, I worry about temperature differences in the BK (think its called stratification). BK Temperature reading is taken < 10cm from bottom, and as we know heat rises so top stays above 80oC for ages while recirc (the CFC pipe bore and pump does not create whir...

NobbyIPA wrote:yes usually the cooling time will do

what i do is
flame out add hops, quickly cool to 80c then stop cooling hold it at that temp for 15 20 mins then chill to pitching temperature
Thanks NobbyIPA, I'll try that on my next brew.

Hops at Flame Out

If a recipe calls for hops at flame out, is it best to steep them in the hot wort for a while before cooling, or is the 20 to 30 mins cooling time enough?

Re: saving wine

Red wine should last longer than white as white oxidises quicker. Respectfully, I've got to disagree with that. As long as you use the sachets supplied with the kits, take care as not to let the wine "splash" after fermentation, cork & lay the bottles on their side, they will be air tight. Sorry, I...

Re: Kits to AG is it easy?

Orval62 - I have just jumped from brewing kits to AG and I wouldn't say it's easy but, if you read up and prepare yourself properly, get your head around what needs doing and why, and have the right volumes and temperatures written down close at hand, you'll be in a better position come the glorious...

Re: saving wine

Red wine should last longer than white as white oxidises quicker. I make a lot of Elderberry wine and, depending on the year and quality of the berries, it benefits from 2 or 3 years of maturation. Saying that, I have got a Rhubarb wine from 2011 that still tastes fine :)

Re: AG#1 - Summer Lightning Clone

Thanks Deebee, I'm looking into making a hop filter before my next brew, but I'll probably have to change the Buffalo boiler tap first :-( I have brewed the same recipe and it is a cracker. the longer you leave it, the better it will be. This will be easier said than done, it's smelling very temptin...

This is what it looked like this morning.......

Also, it smells lovely! Sort of spicy and fruity. If it tastes anywhere near as good as it smells, I'll be chuffed :-)

AG#1 - Summer Lightning Clone

I chose this recipe after reading about 'Demon Valley' brewery's first all grain brew day and, seeing as the ingredients are fairly straight forward, decided it would also be my first brew. Ingredients; •5kg Pale Ale Malt •46g Challenger Hops @ 90 minutes •15g Goldings Hops @ 15 minutes •9g Goldings...

Re: Lazy Kegging!

I've got 2 King Kegs and have never once removed the taps for cleaning, just running some VWP through them seems to do the trick :-)

Re: Flavour "references" ?

It might be useful for you to look at a 'beer flavour wheel' as they can help with flavour descriptions, try Google.
