Re: Force Carbination

A serving pressure only needs to push it out. I set to 2 psi.

Don't fire it out at 10 psi. But then my lines are only 6 foot from keg to tap.

Re: How can this be possible?

Wow, that OG and FG do give you a 7.09% beer. That is a good efficiency first off from 5.3 kg of fermentable malt but to get down to 1.0004 in a week you have a strong, thin beer so I wonder at the yeast and temp during fermentation if the figures are right. It's not unheard of. I take the OG when I...

Re: Hop Growing 2018

How are they doing now, Matt? I have a golding (cobbs) now in its third season that is growing beautifully over a wood store and into an apple tree (trained along wires). Last season, I got a decent harvest but I kid you not, in the first year I got one cone. Nice big cone mind, but one! I plopped i...

Re: Belgian beer using British grain?

I've used MO for dubbel and currently have a triple carbonating that was made with pilsner malt. These are British and German malts, not too geographically distant from what would grown in Belgium. The climate is not too different. I read somewhere once that Britsh and Belgian pale malts aren't too ...

Re: Epsom and gypsum after boil or before?

My point is that if you wish to treat the water then the only time you have water is before the mash. So do as you want up front to have the water you want for your brew. Otherwise you're really talking mash ph, which, i hear and if you're measuring, should be about 5-6. This is slightly acidic as n...

Re: Epsom and gypsum after boil or before?

I treat the water as it's heating as strike water. My treatment consists of just a Camden tablet as I'm in Yorkshire so the water is obviously beautiful 😎

Re: Belgian Dubbel recipe but worried perle hops are minty

Had that sample small bottle this evening. Wow, no need to have worried. Smells like rum and raison ice cream! I didn't do any raison addition BW. Clean taste, malty, raison with an earthy hop aftertaste. It's a Belgian dubbel alright. The yeast dropped it out and packed as a smear on the bottom of ...

Re: finings

Exactly what Alex says. I do the same and it has improved my beers. The sediment dropped in secondary is amazing with this stuff.

Ensure you add it to really cold beer. I add mine to 1C beer in the garage fridge a few days into secondary.

Re: Arduino code help for temperature controller

Hi Stoat, Not got an ardunio myself (but looked at it or a pi) but this looks like good old c to me. You have a void loop constantly going with a slight delay at the end. I would leave that slight delay and set up some variables before the loop for debounce state and last time and then check in the ...

Re: Hop Growing 2017

Love the pics Stewb! Being in Yorkshire too I will have to post some of my EKG (cobbs), fuggles and prima donna (first gold) all about to start year 2. All look very strong. Cascade is but a twig with some green atm but it is early in year 1 and forming roots. I have 4 more prima donna at a very ear...

Re: Belgian Dubbel recipe but worried perle hops are minty

Thanks guys. I brewed this on Saturday and been fermenting for 5 days now. I have high hopes for this. Expecting around 7% abv.
Used a rehydrated safbrew Abbeye yeast in the end as my westmalle culture is too small.
Will put it aside for winter, after a sample.

Thanks Duncans.
Yep, not the distinctive taste I'd want in beer.
Glad to hear your experiences of perle are good.

My first attempt at a dubbel! I really like them so have to try.

Belgian Dubbel recipe but worried perle hops are minty

Hi All, I am prepping for a 5 gal all grain Belgian Dubbel this weekend: MO 5.25kg Biscuit Malt 250g Aromatic Malt 200g Chocolate Malt 50g Homemade Candi 1kg The chocolate is a cheat for colour as my candi is caramel coloured rather than really dark. And looking at what I have in the freezer I thoug...

Re: Best general purpose malt

I also make British or American pales mostly with the annual Christmas dark beer. Done the odd Belgian too. I always use Maris Otter as a base. Being in Yorkshire I started with Fawcett, moved to Crisps and Simpsons and found both to be better imho as well as cheaper. Of course my processes probably...

Re: Wilko prices

But isn't a basic product good for exerimenting with? Try out different hop steep/tea additions and dry hopping? I saw it as a quick way to try different hops against the same malt bill. I usually do all grain but seeing that price and being short on time I got a wilko cerveza 1 tin kit for £9.50 kn...
