Re: Purchasing a suitable biab bag
I bought a large piece of voile last year but didn't get round to getting it down into a bag. I never even thought of draping it over the boiler.
Probably a daft question but how do folk sterilise the cloth?
Putting through a washing machine might leach a soapy taste from the washing powder

Purchasing a suitable biab bag
I've had a look online and some are priced very high, just wondering what folks have used as a bag. Are they specifically bought from hb shops, or home made (that option is out for me as I don't have sewing machine) or improvised such as paint strainer. Basically I'm struggling to find a bag and a l...

Re: Making the step to àg
Thanks folks. I looked into biab last year but didn't get it off the ground. I think I will buy a large bucket from copper kettle and build a boiler. The local hb shop sells the bags, so with a bit of luck I'll be brewing my first batch in a few weeks.

Making the step to àg
Hi. I've been kit brewing for years and want to make the jump into ag. I have a couple of queries though so would be appreciative of any advice. I'm looking to keep the cost down so I'm thinking about building my own mashtun from a picnic coolbox. Boiler I can afford to buy and will probably go for ...

Re: Want to try extract will fv converted to boiler be enoug
Thanks for the replies folks. I'll take your advice and not convert the youngs fv that I have. There's a home brew shop near me I plan to pop in to see if there's anything similar to the pp vessel that trout man recommends. Unfortunately I don't think I can afford a metal boiler but will be scouring...

Want to try extract will fv converted to boiler be enough
Hi, I've been brewing kits for a couple of years and only recently began to experiment by adding dme to the wort which has gave pleasant results. A friend of mine has started extract brewing and gave me a sample. It blew my brews away, so I quite fancy giving it a try. I've had a look at various pla...

Re: Using Holland & Barrat malts?
Cheers lads. They were the ones I seen but wasn't sure.
I guessed about the cod liver oil mind
Would marmite/Vegemite work. B&M bargains were selling tubs of Vegemite recently for 49p a jar.
Edit. Marmite is yeast extract not malt. So answer is probably no

Does anyone have a link to the type of malt extract from H&B
I've had a look on the site but can't see anything.

Sorry , it's on the bottom of my sig. Youngs ubrew lager. Used normal white sugar with the malt extract.
I'm trying to stay close to the box instructions this time, before messing about.

Re: Started my first ever kit (wilkos lager) on Monday night
I've took my first reading. The liquid on top of the fv still has bubbles around it, so I'm assuming it's still fermenting. The reading from the hydrometer is 1010. Is this cloudy colour normal for this stage? http://www.flickr.com/photos/48900864@N06/4523611499/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/4890086...

Title says it all really.
Planning on using 2litre lemonade bottles, and experimenting with different sugars, demerara, cane, honey. Will this be safe?

Re: Started my first ever kit (wilkos lager) on Monday night
Great thanks for the replys lads, the heater has been set at 22c, so hopefully i haven't had it too hot. I've checked again today and there's still signs of fermentation. Guess I'm just being impatient.
