Re: White residue inside bottles: what is it?

Well, thanks all. Got my starsan now. Pretty simple to use, why didn't I buy this when I first started! Hopefully the issue will stop. Getting sick of scrubbing each bottle after drinking. I'd like to Do a simple rinse after drinking method of washing my bottles. Cheers, Dan

Re: White residue inside bottles: what is it?

Thanks Anthony, I have been looking into Starsan. My homebrew shop does not sell starsan but does sell "PHOSPHORIC ACID BLEND SANITISER" . It looks like the same bottle and does the same thing. Is it the same?

Re: White residue inside bottles: what is it?

I have had quite a lot of experience with PET bottles and have drawn the conclusion that they are really a "one trip" solution and that if you want something you can recycle glass is the only alternative. There are plenty of ways of acquiring glass bottles for nothing so unless you have other reaso...

Re: White residue inside bottles: what is it?

If it is residue from sodium percarbonate then it is because you soaked them for too long and have hard water. I believe others found a vinegar soak will remove the deposits. Thanks for that tip. I will give it a go. Will see how that pans out. For some reason it occurred in some bottles which I di...

Re: White residue inside bottles: what is it?

A further update to this, in case someone is encountering the same problem and comes across this thread. I tried in the weekend to remove the residue with bleach and water. The stuff was pretty stubborn and didn't come off, unless I scrubbed the hell out of it. The attached picture shows what happen...

Re: White residue inside bottles: what is it?

OK, thanks for the replies. So it is either some cleaning agent crystallised or yeast residue. I will try to remove with bleach and see if it comes back on my next batch... Cheers, Dan

Re: White residue inside bottles: what is it?

Hi Orlando, Andy and Fil, No, I didn't use an Oxyclean type on the bottles. I did use Mangrove Jack no rinse steriliser but only on the plastic bottles. Ironically, in order to solve the problem, I used an Oxyclean agent to get rid of it. However, I didn't soak and leave to cool. I put Oxyclean in, ...

Re: sweet cider

Hi,

I would recommend the Mangrove jacks strawberry & pear. Also, add some some pear juice and brown sugar. The kit has a flavour pouch and artifical sweetner (don't tell the drinkers). Best sweet kit cider I have made.

Cheers,
Dan

White residue inside bottles: what is it?

Hi All, I have made a few home brews, maybe about 30, and now I have just encountered a new problem. That is, a white residue stuck to the inside of my bottles. It happened for two brews, a coopers stout and a cider. However, it didn't occur to a pale ale in between. The beer and cider both taste gr...

Re: Kit Adaption Geezah Style

Cheers Geezah, My first question wasn't too clear. So I am going to steep for about 45 mins. Remove the grains, chuck in the Honey and then bring to boil. How long did you boil the wort ? Just 1 min or does it need longer?

Re: Boil time for Steeped grains

Hi, thanks for the reply,

Sorry, should have been clearer. After I remove the grains, bring to the boil, how long do I need to boil?

Regards,
Dan

Boil time for Steeped grains

Hi All, I have started brewing again and am beginning with doing adapted kit recipes. I am going to steep some speciality grains, add DME, bring to the boil and then put in some finishing hops, chill and add to the FV with the beer kit. I am unsure how long I should boil the DME/speciality grains co...

Re: Kit Adaption Geezah Style

Thanks for the Geezah, I have made my way back into the world of homebrew after a few years off. Now I don't have time for AG or Extract, so its adapted kit recipes all the way for me. This is a good guide to refresh my brain. I have a couple of questions: 1) How long do you need to boil steeped spe...

Re: Blackrock Cider Primary fermentation

Hi Tony,

Mine kicked off pretty quickly. Its a cider yeast though, so dont be expecting any yeast floating on top. It kind of ferments without head, if you get what I mean.
