Re: Craftbrewing Forum

For quite a long time Google decided it was unsafe for no reason. That stopped a lot of people accessing the site and it never really recovered from that. That and the general slowdown in use of forums in favour of other social media like Facebook and other forums around haven't helped it either. I'...

It's certainly somewhat broken. I believe the man with the keys is currently on holiday so probably can't do much about it.

Re: Fresh yeast

About 2 miles towards Billericay from where I am. Bellhouse Brewery.

I've never tried the beer though, have to track it down. The Fox and Hounds might be A good place to start.

Re: Reverse Osmosis filter, advice sought

I'm not very technical when it comes to water, but what I do know is that if you have hard water you should put a water softener in before the RO unit as hard water seriously reduces the life of the RO membrane. Not sure whether that will be relevant for you or not with fairly small volumes, but its...

Re: RIS help needed!

I doubt it will go much lower than it is now. 1100 to 1030 is quite good. Adding more yeast now will do nothing as the high alcohol content will just kill it. The only yeast surviving now is what has become used to the high alcohol. Give it another couple of weeks and it will have gone down as far a...

Re: taps for casks

I've never seen a cask with a threaded hole where the tap goes. In my experience that hole has always been sealed with a keystone. http://a1barstuff.co.uk/cask-keystone And then a Cask tap is put into that http://a1barstuff.co.uk/single-plastic-cask-tap-34-bsp With a large hammer http://a1barstuff.c...

Re: Kegging and low consumption

I never cleaned my lines while they were attached to a keg. Once a keg was empty then I would clean the lines and tap thoroughly ready for the next time. As far as i can make out the beer lines are just an extension of the inside of the keg, it's all sealed and airtight, I can't see the problem. Som...

I wouldn't boil the grains at all, I would steep them then remove them before the boil.

Re: Beer Gun or counter pressure filler

For filling the odd bottle I always used a short piece of pipe pushed over the tap, connected to a bottling wand.
For bottling bigger batches I used a beer gun.
I rarely bottled bigger batches from a keg, I couldn't really see the point, easier to leave it in the keg.

Re: Gas burner ring for 100L pot

I had no problem using a 7.5kw burner bringing 50L to the boil. It took about 30 minutes to get up to the boil post sparge. You can easily lose heat if you don't have good wind breaks. I boiled inside a garage with good air circulation, but it wasn't drafty, I think that made a big difference compar...

Re: First attempt - TCP!

I would always use a Camden tablet to remove any Chlorine or Chloramines that are in your tap water prior to brewing. Some areas of the UK are worse than others but they are so cheap might as well. I know you mentioned you used Starsan to sanitise your brewing kit, but would did you use to clean it,...

Re: Back at it...Ridley's Mild

Cool, thanks for that. There does seem to be some theory out there in interweb world of brewing folklore from years long gone that too much Black Malt or too much Chocolate Malt is a bad idea, something else in brewing to treat with a pinch of salt. I wonder at what point too much does become too mu...

Re: Back at it...Ridley's Mild

Have you used that much Black Malt in a brew before, it seems like a lot to me and I recall reading that you shouldn't use much as it can taste too bitter.. I've never tried it though. I read a similar thing about chocolate Malt and made a brew with 10% Chocolate Malt and it was lovely so I'm not re...

Re: Wanted - A slightly sweeter stout recipe

I brewed this a while back, it got some very good reviews from those that tasted it. You can just increase the overall grain volume to increase th OG should you wish, but this should give a good starting point. I mashed at 68 to keep some sweetness to the beer. OG 1049. 36 IBU 77.5% Crisp Pale Malt ...
