Just thinking of keeping it historic, so use Golding or Fuggle to bitter with as well.

Re: Old english hop blend
Its a blend of 5 varieties. Two of these now come under the EKG banner (Cobb and Early Bird) so you could be getting these when you order EKG anyway. Fuggle speaks for itself. White Grape is no longer grown in any quantity, except at ABOH and my garden. And Mathon is probably the oldest commercial E...

Re: Thoughts on which Bittering Hop to Grow
To be honest First Gold and Northdown are great bittering hops. Respectively I use them in my IPA, Wheat Beer and Session Bitter. But I don't go for higher alpha hops for bittering as they can impart harsh flavours, particularly as I only use English hops. Magnum is a very neutral flavour hop so a g...

Re: Shredding whole hops?
Exactly how it works I'm afraid. The vast majority of the essential oils are lost in the boil, which is why I favour heavier late hopping and steep hopping. Even the most efficient coppers will only extract 35%, the rest goes up the chimney. Lupulin doesn't dissolve very well which is why it still l...

Re: First time growing
Leave them all for the first year as it strengthens the root stock.
Depending on how many strings you put up per plant, usually 2 or 3, then you can train a couple of bines per string for future years.

That should say Tun and not Run I guess?
On that basis it depends on your malt/liquor ratio. But your question is a bit too open ended really. Do you mean the strongest beer by ABV or the final volume.

Re: Hop Growing Advice
They really don't spread that far. Male hops will but females don't tend to. Should you get a feeder pop up you can just pull it up and cut it back at the crown. It won't do that for a couple of years though. Restricting the roots is not ideal as the ground can get waterlogged and it will potentiall...

Re: Can I use old hops stored in the garage for dry hopping?
Even vacuum packed, without refrigeration there'll be deterioration. Use them for bittering, and assume 30% loss of alpha. The biggest expense in home brewing isn't ingredients, it's your time. Don't waste your time for some measly hops. Hops can grow, and will continue to grow long after you're go...

If they've been out of the light they'll be fine. As already mentioned give them a rub and a sniff. Citra is too expensive to waste!

Re: Old Beers & Brewing
How can you copyright a beer that you have plagiarised from 1862? Quite easily I'm guessing. Ed has done the research and interpreted his findings into (and no offence meant) a best guess and something useable for other brewers. Unless you have a complete understanding of the coding used by brewers...

These are some great recipes, but I take it they're your interpretation of them and not the actual from the brewers notes. Hi Dave , Thanks for the comments, all of my recipies have called for the interpretation of actual brewer`s production records , and sometimes there`s a lot of information , an...
