Hello from Kent (the garden of England)

Post by 7593steve » Mon May 14, 2018 1:49 pm

Hi all, I've been brewing for about 10 years now and just bought the Grainfather to make life a little easier and speed up my brew day.
I've been dipping in for a little knowledge every now and then, and decided it was time to register.

It's taken me this long to start thinking about water chemistry as I'd like to try my hand at Lagers, our tap water in these parts is mega hard and filtered through chalk and I'd like to stop buying 25 litres of bottled water every week.

Welcome Steve. :)

There's a section on the JBK website covering water treatment here - http://www.jimsbeerkit.co.uk/water_treatment.htm , but it sounds like you have 'problem' water that needs more that just a bit of tweaking.

It's perfectly possible to make great beer from (initially) very hard water, but you need the right diagnostics and the right acids to get rid of the excess hardness. Hopefully Eric will see this - he makes excellent beer with water from the Sunderland area, which sounds similar to your water.
