Is Flaked Maize the same as Kellogg's Cornflakes?

Just wondered as it would be a lot cheaper than the stuff you can buy at the home brew shops?

Dunno about Kellogg's (I avoid big brands like the plague),but I used 180g of Morrison's cornflakes in a recent brew and the resultant beer was beyond excellent - well,by my standards anyway!

Just thought on,Chris. All those B vitamins and niacin which you list as ingredients in cornflakes, presumably they all have nutrient value for yeast, unless some or all of them are destroyed in the boil, that is?

Just buy your flaked maize from somewhere that sells horse food - £7 for a 25 kilo sack.

How much are we looking to save here Chris ? Can't imagine it would be more than a few coppers, couple of quid for a box of cornflakes and about the same for a kilo of flaked maize at the HB shop

Hmm,now you put it that way...! Still,it's good to know that if you get 'caught short' the nipper's brekkie food wiil do the same job as the 'real thing'! Got me wond'rin now,can I use shredded wheat/weetabix in place of torrefied if I run out? In any case, using Alpen would be a good sign of desperation and/or boredom.

Here's my thinking.

I would like to make Pilsner style lager using flaked corn or rice as the adjunct, approx 15% of total grist.

4.00 kg Pilsner (2 Row) Ger (2.0 SRM) Grain 84.2 %
0.75 kg Corn, Flaked (1.3 SRM) Grain 15.8 %
60.00 gm Saaz [3.70%] (90 min) Hops 26.0 IBU
40.00 gm Saaz [3.70%] (10 min) (Aroma Hop-Steep) Hops -
2 Pkgs SafLager West European Lager (DCL Yeast #S-23) Yeast-Lager

Really want to try another lager but not sure I I could get away with using cheap cornflakes. Might just get some from Barley Bottom at 1kg for £1.49 its a great price!

I agree with Mysterio, I'm not sure there are any great savings to be made. I've been thinking about doing some breakfast cereal brews for a bit of fun (watch this space for Coco Pop Porter), but I don't expect them to be significantly cheaper than all malt.

...but it's certainly more convenient popping over the road for a box of cornflakes than having to go to the HBS.

I was in the supermarket today looking at the ingredients list for several kinds of breakfast cereal. Cornflakes and rice krispies would seem to be pretty useable if you wanted to try it, with grain in excess of 90% and almost all the rest malt extract and sugar which we put in our beer anyway.

I'd be wary of bran flakes, 60% wheat, 20% unfermentable fibre and the rest sugar, or sugar puffs — 40% sugar! It's marginal at best with cornflakes but there are much cheaper ways to buy sugar than in breakfast cereal!
