Honey Malt - What is it? Where can I get it?

Post by phatboytall » Mon Sep 05, 2011 8:02 am

I've had a few american pale ales recently that list Honey Malt as one of the malts, it leaves a lovely honey like sweetness to the beer that works really well to bring out the maltiness. The question is,

Where can i buy some in the UK? And if not what is its most likely subsitute?

It's from a maltster in Canada called Gambrinus, and it's similar to German melanoidin malt or Belgian aromatic malt (more like the former maybe)

I have some Wyerman Melanidin malt but thats much darker, listed as EBC 60-80 where as Honey Malt is 20-30 SRM?

Are we sure they do the same thing? I'd heard british Caramalt would do a similar job?

I have 20-25 Lovibond on the Honey Malt from a distributor's website, and 23-31L for the Melanoidin, from Weyermann. They aren't exactly the same but they are both supposed to be versions of a type of German malt called "brumalt", and should both give a sweet, rich malty flavor/aroma.

Every place I've ever read about these two malts describes them as "intense" versions of munich and while good in many beers are not that close a substitute for honeymalt.
I'm just here for the beer.

Honeymalt adds honey sweetness without any caramel/toffee flavors. It's a key ingredient on one of the beers that I keep on tap. To the best of my knowledge honey malt unique. Maybe you could use aromatic or brumalt and subtract some crystal malt?

Not certain if it is from Gambrinus, reach out to them to confirm.

Just as an FYI i spoke with this HBS and it doesn't actually appear to be honey malt that they are selling. The guy I spoke to seemed to think that Melanoidin and honey malt were the same thing so it appears that what they have listed is just Melanoidin malt.
