How old is to old?

Post by alix101 » Thu Dec 20, 2012 6:19 pm

I've been given a box of various malts chocolate, crystal, maris, all are in sealed bags, but they are a year out of date, whats the downside to using them ? I could maybe see a, problem with the unmodified grains, but are the others good to go?

It should not be a problem.

Base malts loses some enzymes, but since there is none of that in crystal malts.....

+1
When using the Maris Otter, or other pale malts if any, I'd recommend blending with some fresher base malt, maybe increase your overall quantities slightly to compensate for reduced efficiency. But I certainly wouldn't let them go to waste. "Get amongst it!"

Why so pessimistic? Brew four batches of Foreign Stout calling for 500g black malt each, problem solved.
