Cara Rye Malt

Post by DaveyT » Tue Nov 26, 2013 11:40 pm

Hello
Just ordered some Cara Rye Malt (Weyermann) on a whim. The only thing I can find on tinternet is that it's quite liqouricey with burnt sugar.
Does anybody know anything else about it? Sounds like I made a mistake!

Not used it yet but I want some. I had a Black IPA made by Weird Beard that included Crystal Rye (UK version) and it was top! And you could taste the crystal rye. Get the right recipes and I think you will be glad you got it - there will be people on here who will be able to suggest recipes, but it depends what beer styles you like I guess. I'm after some roasted/chocolate rye too.

Was that the Fade To Black IPA, that is a cracking pint. I had one tonight.

Yes, Fade to Black, that was it. Very nice. I've had a Weird Beard stout too, also excellent.

Adnams Ghost Ship is an American Pale Ale that uses Crystal Rye Malt. Supposed to give a sort of nuttiness or perhaps spiciness to it.

This is all good stuff. Any idea what % were used and whether other things were thrown in with it? Beer Alchemy tells me it isn't very dark which I'm surprised at.
I had two excellent beers recently which were mysteriously dark and I bought this in the hope of creating a bit off kilter. Perhaps a bitter.
I had Bottlenose Bitter by Speyside brewery and it was great; slightly off piste without being too whacky. I initially thought they had used a touch of molasses but on reading about rye crystal I'm wondering if it was that. The other was something that was 2.5% in the Craft Brew Pub in Angel but it was at the end of a long session so I never caught the name. I'd love to know what it was though. If this rye crystal can go into something hoppy, as small as 2.5% and make it taste that good, it'll be a revelation.
