Klages malt Substitute

Post by jceg316 » Fri Apr 24, 2015 12:58 pm

Hey, I've got my hands on a few recipes, a lot of which ask for klages malt. I've never seen it in any shops here and so far my research doesn't really say what a good substitute would be. I've seen it in both pale ale recipes and lager recipes, so not sure if pale malt or pilsner.

Golden promise can be used in pale ales and lager.
I'm just here for the beer.

Thanks for letting me know. The only pale malt I buy is maris otter (mostly out of habit more than anything else) so when I try these recipes I'll get golden promise. It will be a good reason to branch out.

I know that I am a little late to the party, but Klages is an older North American 2-row cultivar. Klages kind of became a synonym for North American 2-row malted barley in the 1990s. Most North American 2-Row malted barley is made from a called named Harrington these days, so its use in recipes is kind of archaic. Maris Otter is not a good substitute for either of these cultivars. What you want is a neutral lager malt because that's what Klages and Harrington were developed to produce. Craft brewing is a secondary market for these cultivars.
