Bairds pale malt
Anyone use this malt l been given a sack to play with. I know it's a 50/50 mix of marris n pearl I think ?. Reviews seem to be a mixed bag, varying from complete crap to good. I biab if this makes a differance
Re: Bairds pale malt
Bairds is fine. But I found I was getting much lesser efficiency than the Warminster which I use now using the same methods etc, so be prepared for that. Efficiency isn't an issue as long as you are aware of it. Perhaps work on 5-10% less than you normally cater for. If you get a higher efficiency you can always liquor back

Re: Bairds pale malt
So on a grain bill of 3.5kg ill add say 200g more ? Or there about
Re: Bairds pale malt
If your efficiency is usually say 75% for a recipe, calculate for 70% and give that a go. As I say you can always liquor back if the efficiency is better than what you estimated.

Re: Bairds pale malt
Cheers I have a 25kg sack to play with hopefully the high water to malt ratio will work in my favour50quidsoundboy wrote:i use them routinely and usually get great extract (~85%)
Re: Bairds pale malt
I'd just brew with it as normal. If you find you get less extract then adjust next time. I've often found that some of my tastiest beers have been the weaker ones. I've bought a couple of different base malts when they were cheap from the Malt Miller and found I got exactly the same extract as my usual Crisp Maris Otter. Never tried Bairds though.
Re: Bairds pale malt
I use it as my base malt all the time, get it from Brewers Select in Peterborough at about £14 per 25kg ready crushed collected. They still do one sack orders. It is a 50/50 mix of Maris Otter and something else ( might be the cheapest available malting barley at the time ! )
As I never really measure efficiency, I cant comment on that. Never had a stuck mash with it, though

Re: Bairds pale malt
What's delivery like from brewers select for a one off order
Re: Bairds pale malt
Work takes me near enough to collect, fortunately
Delivery cost is quite high, I think, about £15.00 minimum, but you'd best check the website to be sure.
However, if you are buying a few sacks I dont think the cost goes up much, which would spread the cost for a bulk buy.

Yea I just looked it starts at 12.95 delivery. If bairds had a better rep I'm sure a few around me would consider a bulk buy. I belive a pallet is 35 quid for upto 40 sacks.
