My fuggles have gone crazy! With about 30 shoots, 10 or so which are just under a foot long!

Goldings not quite so busy but has 20 shoots, a couple of which are about a foot.

they are both in their 2nd year, last year I only let 3 vines grow, should I do the same again?

Seems a shame to cut most of the shoots back.

Any advice?
In their second year, the rhizomes tend to send out large number of shoots. For best yield, you want to cut most of these off, leaving about four to eight shoots per rhizome
so I shall go for 6 vines from each. 5 for growning a 1 for cuttings!

My golding is having a growth spurt thanks to the good weather - have pruned out all but 5 shoots, and they are all between about 5 and 10 inches :)

What is the best fertiliser, best method of introducing it and best time to feed the hops?

OK - I thought my Goldings were doing well (it has 4 bines - each is between 5 and 7 foot long in a "W" shape on the fence, but that's much better! =D>

Nice photos...

Well spring arrived late here on the Island...

I planted my rhizome og First Gold the day I got it and there was a shoot appeared but it dissapered again a few days later... :(
My guess is something ate it!

Will more shoots appear?
As its the first year I'm not counting on any hops, but some sign of life would be nice!

Regards,

Guy

Yep you will get more, just be patient
Might be worth keeping something around it, as cats do seem to chew off fresh shoots

These pics are nearly a week old now. So there a little bit bigger now. This year ive set up lines for them to be directed around the garden overhead.

Got loads of cuttings of each variety growing so i can sell them as dormant rhizomes before spring if anyones interested. I'll be selling my hop harvest as well in the autumn. See what i can make flogging em on ebay.

Hi!
One shoot has broken the surface and so far has NOT been eaten by anything...

I have placed gravel and pebbles around the base (3" away from the shoot) in th ehope of discouraging any feline activities...

Then I sprinkled the area liberally with slug pellets after the early morning showers had finished.

I'm hoping this will be the first of several shoots, which given a few more days sunny and warm weather will climb up the carefully installed training wires...

:D

Cheers!

I NEED ADVICE!

i planted progress and challenger hops in pots this winter... now they are as tall as my house!!!

its a pretty big house and when measured the hops were growing 7.5 inces a day!

the problem is i want them to stop. if they climb any higher they are gonna obscure the sky dish.

i was planning on cutting the tip off the bines to stop the upward growth but is this the right thing to do or not?

Oh and ive noticed blackfly on them aswell. bastartdos! anyone know any good products/methods to get rid of em?

yeah, nip out the growing tips.
As for Black & Greenfly, reach for the Weapons of mas Destruction... I find evil chemicals best rather than trying to persevere with organic sprays :)
