Hallertauer Help

Post by jimp2003 » Sat Dec 28, 2013 9:03 pm

Hi guys and gals.

I am planning my brews for next year and will be brewing a couple of beers that I have not tried before - a grisette and a pilsener. Both of the recipes that I will be using call for hallertauer but they do not specify which variant.

I can get hold of MIttlefruh and Hersbrucker from Maltmiller along with all of the grains and other bits and bobs that I will need. Does anyone have any experience of both of these hops and can shed some light as to whether I would be better using one over the other? Or is there another hop I should try?

As always I am grateful for any advice.

Cheers!

Jim

I've only tried Hersbrucker but it's a lovely delicate hop so can vouch for that one :)
Cheers and gone,

I have no idea about the grisette, but if you're doing a German pilsner either one would work by itself or as a blend. I got some mittlfruh recently that will go into a pilsner. Saaz would also be a good choice.
I'm just here for the beer.

Thanks guys.

That is one vote for each - does anyone else have a view to tip me one way or the other?

I've used Robs Mittlefruh for a slightly modified Kolsch. It was bittered to 25IBU and had a small amount thrown in late. It gave a very typical hop flavour for the beer type - slightly spicy, peppery - you've tasted it before in good german beers. No surprises at all - exactly what I expected and quite nice.

I used NZ Hallertau from Rob. It was fab.

I notice he hasn't got it anymore, so not much help I'm afraid
I buy from The Malt Miller
