Northdown vs northern brewer.

Post by barry44 » Thu Feb 27, 2014 12:06 pm

Hi guys, I recently completed an order with rob at the maltmiller and as part of it bought some of the ingredients for mysterio's snpa clone.

However, I appear to have boobed in the choice of the Bittering hops where I have bought northdown instead of northern brewer.

From the description on the site, north down and northern brewer are related so I don't think that I should have any issues with using it. However, I just wanted to check in here first.

So, can anyone see an issue with this replacement?

Not used NB but northdown is described as an improved version of it. I'm sure it will be fine, esp as I guess you are only adding it early. There's not a problem.

Lovely hop, earthy, herbal, minty and sometimes a tad fruity.

I much MUCH prefer Northern Brewer over Northdown, but Sierra Nevada Pale Ale contains neither, so it's a moot point.

I've used it a few times for bittering and it's very clean. You won't have a problem :)
Cheers and gone,

I hear what you are saying Seymour but mysterio's recipe does get good reviews.

Yes, his is definitely a great reliable recipe for the American Pale Ale style. I'm just saying neither is authentic, so don't stress it. Northdown will be fine as a full boil bittering addition only.

That looks closer to the correct recipe as far as I know.

Northdown IS a lovely Hop although quite fruity. It might be worth using it in an English Pale Ale or Bitter recipe if you are using bland dry yeasts like US05 or Nottingham to add that fruity complexity that you can sometimes get with good liquid English Ale yeasts.

Using it in SNPA though is wholly inappropriate, It will make a great beer just not Sierra Nevada.

The original recipe is on here somewhere.

Just tried mine Barney, its lovely.

Although it isn't snpa per se, it tastes like how I remember snpa to taste. I'll need to get a bottle of it to compare.

MM sounds Lovely. I have made some ace Kits. Milestone were brilliant kits, I would happily sup a couple of pints of homewrecker right now. :) Have you told your mate he is on the slippery slope once he starts tampering with them. Now all I can think is , I can get a sack of malt and 500g of hops for the same price and get 25 gallon. :)
