Hop combinations for Pale Ales/IPA

Post by Cozzyb » Tue Mar 25, 2014 3:31 pm

Hi everyone,

I brew mostly Pale ales, but tend to stick to Single hops due to not really knowing which hops combo well, so decided to ask while giving a list of what I have. So what are generally good combos and also what are good combos out of these hops I own:

Summer (newish Aussie hop)
Pacifica
Citra
Pacifica Gem
Topaz
Ahtanum
Fuggles
Galena
Cluster
Liberty
Amarillo (pretty old and probably needs binning)

I use Magnum for pretty much all of my 60 min beers due to its reputation as being clean.
So any advice? thanks.

Btw I am open to all combos if you explain what it will taste like and maybe a commercial example that would really help :)

Can't whack cascade and Amarillo.

Cascade, Amarillo and citra is also nice.

Don't bin the amarillos without checking them out. I've had amarillos in the freezer over five years and they were still good.
I'm just here for the beer.

Experiment a bit, throw two hops together that you think would make a good pairing from your single hop beers and try it. At worst you'll make something that's drinkable, at best you may find your perfect pint.

Try citra and Amarillo. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

How would you combine these? Simcoe bittering and Amarillo late or a combination of both added early and late? Got a bag of Simcoe and wondering how best to use it! Cheers!

Not used Ahtanum. Might have to try that combo.

I made this recently and will do again in the very near future now it's all gone.

1050 OG MO - Magnum bittering hops 40 IBU, then 20g Amarillo at 10 mins, 20g Simco at 5 mins and 20g Cascade at flame out. Beautiful!!

I would love to try Ahtanum. Never been able to get hold of any.
