I am contemplating growing my own hops next year but as my house is rented i wanted to do it in a planter i was thinking of something like this

With an upright and some twine attached. Do you think this would be adequate and how high would i need to go.
Im not too worried about a big harvest the first year the main thing i would like them for is to be part of my button hole on my wedding day next August

something like this.
Where is best to buy hop rhizomes and is there varietys that are more hardy than adequate
Cheers Martin
Getting started with hop growing
Re: Getting started with hop growing
They really do best in the ground rather than a pot but if you are prepared to put enough effort in they will grow in a pot. The bigger the better really. That wooden one might dry out a bit fast in hot weather. I'd go for a dwarf variety like Prima Donna/First Gold. They'll need supports about 8 foot high - canes will do. Non-dwarf varieties will grow as tall as your house given the opportunity.
I love the wedding plan but you might struggle to get them ready for August, depending where you live, and how early in August you need them.
