dry hops for bittering?
Hi all.
This is my first post here. New to the forum not to brewing!
I made an APA a while ago, and dry hopped it with citra and cascade. I then fished the hops out and froze them.
I was planning on using them for bittering in another APA type thing.
I was just wondering if anyone had done this and if it worked.

That sounds a bit like hanging the tea bag out to dry for use in a future cuppa . I can't recall anyone doing this, but why don't you try it and let us know the results. Obviously the essential oils will be greatly reduced, but then that's not of primary concern in bittering.Rolfster wrote:Hi all.

Our lass calls me a tight git. Can't wait to show her this post and prove I'm not the worst.

I have done this on two occasions and re used the hops for five minutes and 15 minute additions and thinking that the can be used again I rinse them and froze them in a bag and reused them at 15 minutes mainly to filter the Trub from the beer never ever try it. The two 10 gallon brews were drinkable but I would never do it again. The hops I reused were Hallertau Millfrutha very nice hops but not twice.

I've done something similar.
I have had a few double brewdays. 1st brew a big late hop brew. second brew a stout.
It does work. But is difficult to repeat a brew or predict exactly what you will get.
It was worth doing a few years ago, when hops were costing over £6 for 100g, but as they are around £2 now, I wouldn't bother.

Where are you getting your hops from norm?
Just to clear something up. The hops went into the fermenter after fermentation had slowed down. They didn't get heated at all. They smelt good and I just couldn't bring my self to throw them away. There was more than £2 of hops there.

I've done itn but it is unpredictable. If the second brew Is a mild it works,but its not great. If I was to do it again I might use the hops to enhance a kit, which is already at pre defined levels, so yes just a short boil. It can't hurt
Just like trying new ideas!

I must say the beers I am making are very pale ales or lager type beers and I think there are less flavours to mask hop flavour just using base malts of lager, Vienna and Munich malts anything not decent quality shows up.

I'm interested in this as an idea, but if it really worked (for bittering) then wouldn't all the commercials be doing it?
Hallertau are very low AA which I assume probably means less oily full stop.
