Low Alpha Hops

Post by danwlx » Tue Apr 28, 2015 12:30 pm

Hi there,

A quick question on the use of aroma hops with a low alpha content, a recipe that I am basing my next brew on calls for 30g of flameout hops with the AA quoted as 3.5%, I’m using Celeia hops and the AA stated on the packet is 1% AA. As these are for aroma only would I follow the recipe or will the low AA also have an effect on the aroma produced? How about for hops added for flavour (10 min boil)?

All help gratefully received!

Cheers
Dan

I'd imagine that its just the aroma, not the bitterness, that is required. Just do 30g I reckon. Also get used to crushing the hops between finger and thumb and taking a good sniff, it pays to get a sense of how much gives what.
