Landlord clone, which Styrian?

Post by mbrew » Tue Dec 06, 2016 2:40 pm

I going to have a go at Graham Wheeler's Landlord clone, call for Goldings & Styrian Goldings.
Question is, which Styrian Goldings? There seems to be 3 completely different varieties from what I can see

I've made it with Bobek and it was very nice and pretty similar when I did it side by side with a bottled TTL.

Good to hear it turn out well, just had a look on the malt miller site & they supply SAVINJSKI GOLDINGS (STYRIAN GOLDINGS) with there TTL kit.

Anyone else have any feedback on the differences between the 3 varieties?

In a video clip I saw some time ago from within TT's brewery, they were indeed using Bobek.
Best wishes

If I recall correctly, they never used to distinguish between the different sort of styrian goldings. When I made the TTL two or three years ago I think there were only two varieties and the Malt Miller only had bobek, so that is what I used.

I doubt there is much of a difference between them to be honest.

I agree with the above, Bobek is a lovely hop and I use it all the time, I tried Savinjski once and didn't like it.

So there is a noticeable difference between them.

So hard to make a decision when you don't know the effects of each one....

When I asked a hop merchant about this a few years ago, they told me that the Styrian Golding hop itself is actually Celeia

Styrian Goldings apparently used to be a blend. They are now sold separately. Bobek is bred from Northern Brewer, Celeia and Savinjski originate from Fuggles. Of the three my preference is Bobek. But I don't know which will work best for a Landlord clone sorry.

Always Savinski - I have seen it on a video interview with the head brewer somewhere

I suspect it's like EKG. It's not a single varietal.... I've been lead to suspect TT use Savinski.... but it might be like Beaujolais Nouveau where more is sold than they can physically produce IE a bit of adulteration creeps in....
