Magnum is very good for that purpose, it's not harsh at all

Don't overlook simply adding a bit more grain and water to counter adding a [censored] ton of low AA hops though, you do get a different character to the beer :)

Magnum is pretty much grown for that purpose. It's a great bittering hop.
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.

Magnum is good, my preference at the moment for pilsners is perle for bittering and tettnang for aroma and flavour

I've used Admiral and Chinook for bittering both Saaz and Tettnang lagers before. No problem.

Personally, I don't think the bittering hop makes a massive difference. No doubt it makes some difference but unless you were doing a side by side tasting I think you wouldn't really notice.

Using sterlings is an option.
I'm just here for the beer.

I agree Magnum is ideal, and I've never gotten harshness from it. Rookie's right, Sterling is excellent. German-grown Northern Brewer is perfect for bittering too.

My next lager/pils is going to be bittered with Warrior and finished with Saaz.

^^^Perle seconded. Wonderful hop in Pilsner-based beers. Good AA for such a herby, noble-esque hop.

Just to report back, got this on tap now. Worked fantastically well with the warrior hops. 5g instead of the 30g of saaz so a lot less hop matter boiling for 90 mins. I added 20g of saaz towards the end. Lovely simple lager.
