X TZB 6G?

Post by Uncle Joshua » Sun Feb 10, 2013 11:17 pm

SHMBO being the love she is, is always looking for ways to cut the cost of my brewing. :( Kindly, she has gone out and bought my five packs of X TZB 6G yeast, Brupacks I think?

I have to use it but have no idea what it is?

I can't find the exact answer either. The 6g part almost certainly refers to the weight, 6 grams. The other numbers are similar to some Muntons dry yeast packets I've seen, which I assume are "anonymized" for use in store-brand kits, etc.

If I were you, I'd make a yeast starter/mini batch from dry or liquid malt extract, or several bottles of Malta, etc...pitch it and see what you think of the resulting beer. Hopefully it's just a basic generic English ale yeast along the lines of S-04, Muntons, Coopers, Youngs, etc, possibly descended from Whitbread-B.

It seems risky to pitch an unknown yeast into a full batch, potentially wrecking the fruit of your time and labor (all over such an insignificant cost savings) but then, if you have no choice but to use these packs no matter what, you could just throw caution to the wind, proceed as usual and have fun finding out the hard way.

Alternately: you've been brewing pretty regularly, surely you could reuse the yeast cake from the FV of a batch that turned out nicely, right? Contrary to popular belief, you don't need any expensive lab equipment or specialized knowledge in order to reuse yeast. If you use some common-sense sanitary practices, you can split the dregs into several jars to store in the fridge for quite awhile. You'd at least have a better idea of what you're working with...

Cheers Seymour. SHMBO paid £10 for 5 packs of this stuff. :(

Hmmm... Can't you call the source to ask for more details? Don't despair, they might be perfectly fine.

TNB 6g is pilsner yeast
ZKB 6g is a muntons beer yeast from a Linthwaite kit

This lady may be able to help

Just had a call back from the lady at Muntons. It's s-33, she called it a standard brewing yeast?

S-33
Folcculation: Med-High
Attenuation: Med-High
Ideal Temp: 59-75°F/15-24°C
Alcohol Tolerance: High

Believed to be the same as Edme, one of the original dry yeasts, from the old brewery strain in Mistley, County Essex, England, see also: http://www.edme.co.uk/pdfs/The_History_of_EDME.pdf

Versatile, consistent, fast start and finish. A good all-purpose ale yeast with subtle English characteristics. Despite relatively high attenuation and alcohol tolerance, it can leave behind some pleasant residual sweetness, slow to clear but nonetheless good for bottle conditioning.

Nothing to sneer at, these packets will be perfect for the English ale recipes we've been discussing. Go apologize to your wife and give her a big thank you kiss.
