Hi all,
After some advice, following permission to brew Saturday evening I decided to make a starter last night for a 005 I had been given. This is my first attempt at using liquid but I have some dry backup.
The manufacturing date was Dec 8th 15 which I understand makes it about 6% viable so decided on a small starter to start.
I made a 0.5l starter last night and shook the life out of it before pitching but so far this morning I don't see life (i also gave it another shake).
Is it still to early or was 0.5l too big?

Re: WLP005 - out of date starter
I'm no expert, not ever having made a proper starter before, but I'd have thought it's probably a bit early. I would think half a litre was not too big. Give it a chance and good luck. It's something I want to try for sure.
Re: WLP005 - out of date starter
I had the same issue back in July when I discovered my WLP005 was a month out of date. I made a 1 litre starter and it was day 2 before it took off. Gave it a little swirl everytime I passed the table just to be sure but that probably wasn't needed. It worked fine so give it another day or 3 before you give up on it. Good Luck!

It's alive.
Tasted a drop, doesn't taste too bad (not sure what it should be like as it was a bit sour out of the packet).
As it was a 0.5l starter, is it ok to step to a 2l tonight, it's at high krausen but I was planning a brew tomorrow night.

Personally I prefer to pitch at high krausen, both for step ups, and when pitching into wort.
