Starter Size + extra to freeze?

Post by aamcle » Sun Jan 15, 2017 9:04 pm

I intend to make a starter from a new vial of WLP002 the batch will be 15 litres of mild OG 1.032 but I want enough yeast to be able to freeze 4 or 5 aliquots. I've never frozen yeast for storage before so I'm not sure how big my starter needs to be.

Using a stir plate will a 4 litre starter be enough? Should I step up or can I put the contents of the vial of yeast straight into the 4 litres ?

Thanks All. aamcle

This is the calculator I use for my starters and over pitching. I normally over pitch by 100 billion so I can reuse again. I don't freeze it just leave it in the fridge covered in wort.

Additional credit goes out to Beersmith's article on the subject, and to various internet blogs and websites that I used to check data against.
