Proper job bottle condition yeast.
Proper job bottle condition yeast.
Hi brewers.
I have cultivated the dregs of two bottles of St Austell proper job. Everything seemed to go ok with 300ml of water boiled with 4table spoons of malt extract. Fermentation seemed ok and finished after about three days. I want to use it for a tribute recipe, however my local knowledgeable brew shop said there is a possibility that the yeast used in primary fermentation is not the same yeast as in conditioning or secondary fermentation. Do you think I will get good results if I use it?
Regards.

I've had great results every time. AFAIK they're still bottle-conditioning with their own yeast.

St Austell bottle condition with the same yeast, unless things have changed very recently. I have used Proper Job on several occasions to "borrow" their yeast.

I've used it also with great results. Brewed a EKG SMaSH.

Thanks to you all chaps, that’s given me the confidence I needed ! It’s in the fridge at the moment, I’ll resurrect it in about a weeks time, start it again, and then pitch in a 5 gallon brew. For subfaction purposes will post accordingly!

Re: Proper job bottle condition yeast.
There is a thread on here somewhere that says to start fermentation off on the cool side for 48hrs then rise. It's what St Austell do. I followed that with good results.

Morning brewers.
I said I’d make a post of how the brew went, better late than never!
The beer turned out to be a belter. I brewed along the lines of Brew Uk’s Grain kit, as I have brewed this recipe before using Nottingham yeast, which was ok but not as good as the original. This one was different, the colour, head retention, clarity after one week in the cornie was perfect, the taste and body a very close copy, the only difference I found was it didn’t possess as much hop aroma but still very close. Going back to brewing, fermentation was started at 18c for 3 days then brought up to 20c for the next 4 days. I kegged after 7 days, gravity 1012 but think it wouldn’t have hurt to continue for another few days. I have kept some yeast in a mustard jar from the bottom of the bin to use again, however not being
sure of how the best way to pitch it, I will probably revert to buying another couple of bottles of proper job, drinking the contents and using the dregs again! Judging by the results I am going to be using this strain exclusively in the near future.

Re: Proper job bottle condition yeast.
Glad you had such a stellar result.
Buying St Austell beer - as they have such a great yeast, it's the least you could do . Even though I could add slants of St Austell to my yeast bank, I bought a couple of bottles of PJ last week for my upcoming brewday (together with a Shipyard IPA and TT Landlord - Tesco 4 for £6).

Re: Proper job bottle condition yeast.
I had a brew day yesterday, all grain Proper Job clone using the Proper Job yeast.
As I said I've used it before, in a EKG SMaSH. Lovely.

Re: Proper job bottle condition yeast.
Hi. I am planning a pale brew for Tuesday and want to use proper job.
Is it ok to use lme from Holland and Barret to make my starter? My local Wilko does not stock dme. I don’t have a conical, is this an issue? What can I use instead? Is a Demi Jon to big, or can I use a mason style jar? How much water and hoe much lme should I use? From reading this, is two bottles enough?
Thanks, really excited to try this out.
