Turbo cider all gone wrong advice required for next batch

Post by ipbr21054 » Sun Jun 01, 2008 4:47 pm

Me again,
I have made 3 different batches of TC and all of them are a waste of time.
Each TC taste diluted and thinned out with no taste/flavour at all.

The following is what i have made.
4 ltrs morrisons apple concentrate
1 packet wine yeast
.............................
4 ltrs asda apple concentrate
1 packet champagne yeast
extra 4oz of sugar
..........................
4 ltrs sainsburys apple concentrate
1 packet wine yeast
yeast nutient
4 oz sugar
...............
Each was left until the SG was constant then all put into bottles.

1 was not primed at all.
1 was primed with sugar.
1 was primed with apple juice.

Left all bottles untouched for 3-4 weeks.
I have tasted 1 bottle of each and all have no taste/flaour.
In fact they all taste very very watery.

And advice on what went wrong or what i should do so my next batch will be drinkable would be nice thanks.

On average about 6%.

It`s hard drinking something that tastes of nothing.

I would prefer to have somekind of flavour.

Ive got some co-op apple juice going at the minute, its always tasted ok for me, not sure why yours tastes watery.

Get some proper cider yeast, youngs do one and so does white labs although its significantly more expensive about £5 vs the 60p for the youngs. The white labs is supposed to be the rolls royce of the cider yeast world leaving quite a lot of the apple flavour intact. Yes its expensive but you can reuse it several times.
You could also try stopping the wine yeasts you've been using early therby leaving it a bit sweeter and more appley, you'll need some pottasium sorbate for this and some campden tablets (if you don't add this at the same time the pottasium sorbate gives you an off flavour of geraniums  whatever that tastes like :D

Buy a good Cider kit and forget about TC, Cider kits are cheaper and taste way better.

Used cider yeast (just young's) and flavour soft but good.

I left about half a pint of tc in an opened 2 lt pet bottle for a few days (lazy) and thought I'd taste it before I washed out the bottle. Sour flavour had appeared, tasted exactly like every scrumpy I've ever had. So I'd recommend either:

a) adding a little apple juice to your glass of tc or
b) leaving it open in the warm to go off! :D

leave it alone for a month or so. I find that TC loses all flavour for a while but then comes back!
