Using extra sugar in TC

Post by Fredd » Mon Sep 29, 2008 3:05 pm

Hi,
just wondering if anybody else uses an extra sugar source in turbo cider?

I find that glucose ferments a whole lot cleaner than white or brown sugar.

This is the ingredients for my next batch:

Image

20 litres of Aldi apple juice (49p / litre)
2 x 450g bags of glucose powder (1.97 with offer in Lloyds Pharmacy)
5g of Lalvin EC-1118 Champagne yeast (99p)

OG before the glucose, 1.042 at 18.5c.
After, 1.062 at 18.5c

Interesting stuff about the glucose, personally though i can't see the point in adding any sugar, if you just stick to pure apple juice you'll end up with something close to 5-6 % which is plenty strong i think.

For my tastes the no sugar TC wins is head and shoulders better than any i've made with additional sugar which were thinner, had much less apple taste and gave you a stonking head the next day.

I always add honey to my cider now. just adds more flavour to the brew, tho 8 blended (or juiced if you have a juicer) bramleys add body and depth. i think its just too thin and tastless with out them, like an olde english (and i aint 14 no more!) and dont for get a load of tea for the tannin.

i have experimented with maple syrip and dark brown sugar. the mapel was great. brown sugar did not make much difference.
