Mangel Wurzels and Sugar Beet for wort?

Anyone tried it?

I found someone on the net who did and he claims it worked well.

http://stoneheadcroft.com/2007/12/30/br ... angel-ale/

The recipe is based on one by Mrs Dalgairns
For a ten-gallon cask, boil in fourteen gallons of water sixty pounds of mangel-wurzel, which has been well washed and sliced across, putting some kind of weight on the roots to keep them under water; having boiled an hour and a half, they may be taken out, well broken, and all the liquor pressed from the roots; put it, and that in which they were boiled, on again to boil, with four ounces of hops; let them boil about an hour and a half, then cool the liquor, as quickly as possible, to 70° Fahrenheit; strain it through a thick cloth laid over a sieve or drainer; put it into the vat with about six ounces of good yeast, stir it well, cover it, and let it stand twenty-four hours; if the yeast has then well risen, skim it off, and barrel the beer, keeping back the thick sediment. While the fermentation goes on in the cask, it may be filled up the beer left over, or any other kind at hand; when the fermentation ceases, which may be in two or three days, the cask must be bunged up, and in a few days more, the beer may be used from the cask, or bottled.
These small proportions are here given to suit the convenience of the humblest labourer; but the beer will be better made in larger quantities; and its strength may be increased by adding a greater proportion of mangel-wurzel. By this receipt, good keeping table-beer will be obtained.
I will have to grow the beets myself. Lots of space on the allotment. I was wondering about maybe using sugar beet instead of mangels though....

What thinks the forum? Am I nuts to even think of this?

I'd be tempted to swap the hops out for Brussels Sprouts.

Don't know about that, but after a few pints you could probably rival Le Petomane.

Judging from the smell coming out of the sugar factory, I would give it a miss.

That said Pinto, leeches and even maggots are making a comeback in medicine.

Just spoke to my dad about this and he said they never did this - they used to get paid for cider making in cider (not inside her), (a reason for this would be to guarantee a good cicer maker who drinks his own product) but old beet used to ferment and make the cows pissed up enough they would go crazy for more. Theoretically you could use old pomace, rinse it through to get the flavours then bump up the sugar with beet or mangle, but it would be like a poor mans moonshine. IF, IF I were to try it I would "hop" it with rosemary, thyme, or lavender.

I think it's a good idea.

You may fail miserably, but in doing so you will have learned something, which I hope you'll impart to the forum.

On the other hand, you may discover something good; I hope you'll tell us about that too.

I'm biased in favour of experimentation. I'm a guy that tries just about anything... kvass, peppermint beer, graff (i.e. apple ale - beer / turbo cider hybrid)... even American pre-prohibition lager circa 1880. All those worked out, and except for kvass, they worked out the first time. I've made the graff three times and each time it got better. I'm on my third iteration of kvass (one of which turned into peppermint beer) and this time it's excellent.... and next time will be better.

So go for it. You have nothing to lose but time and money. You have nothing to gain but food, drink, knowledge and enjoyment of life. I say you'll come out ahead. :D

....and in the long run... ahh the long run.... in the long run we're all dead anyway. :(

Well I live no more than ten miles from the british sugar plant at bury st edmunds so sugar beet in fields around are in plentiful supply. Wouldn't know a mangle wurzel if you slapped me in the face with it though!!

That would be the beer :D My drinking bud Big Al, who comes from a long line of bumpkins , always puts that bugger on the jukebox in local pub along with "Blackbird I'll have thee" and strangely the "munamana" song from the muppets! Something in the mangle wurzle moonshine perhaps
