Frankenbrew?

Post by agermich » Tue Apr 19, 2016 8:10 pm

So, I've been doing beer kits for a few years and last week decided that it was time to get another kit on the go. As I wanted to brew that day I popped down to wilkinsons to see what was in stock. Unfortunately there was nothing that really inspired me, and it was at that point that I went a bit wild with my purchases. I'm not quite sure what I have made or what to call it - some kind of Turbo Ginger strawberry thing! I think that I went a little mad on the sugars so the OG was higher than I wanted, ended up adding water up to five gallons to get it to a safer 1.057, currently at 1.016 after five days fermenting so it should end up somewhere around the 5.5 - 6% mark  It's only been going five days so is still super cloudy but I'm surprised by how tasty it is, I added a touch of splenda to my sample to take the edge off and it's lovely. I'll leave it in the FV for at least 2 weeks and then bottle with some splenda and priming suger. Hopefully it will continue being lovely once its had some bottle time. Now What to call it?

Mike X

1.5kg Root Ginger – chop it up in a food processor
4 Lemons (Sliced)
2 Sticks Cinnamon
500g Light Malt Extract
500g Medium Malt Extract
500g Dark brown Sugar
1KG Brewing Sugar
2 Bottles Polish Strawberry Syrup
4.5 Litres Lidl Apple Juice (3 bottles)
1 pint Tea made with 6 Tea Bags
2 packs gervin wine yeast (this was all they had left in wilko)

1. Put the Ginger, lemons and cinnamon in a large pan of water and boil for 30mins.
2. Strain through a muslin cloth into FV
3. Dissolve the sugars in the hot ginger liquor
4. Mix in strawberry syrup, tea and apple juice
5. Make up to 5 Gallons with cold water – I intended to make up to 40 pints, but the OG was a bit high for my liking so I kept going. Ended up with 1.057 OG

my god man what have you made?!

I am tempted to call it a graff ( a made up drink anyway) - but this has a lot more malt and tiny quantity of apple.

difficult to imagine what this tastes like!

Did you have in mind some sort of Ginger Snakebite?

I think that I was going for an alcoholic ginger beer but with some extra flavours in there, so that it's a bit more complex than just the ginger. It has a massive ginger hit to it but with a little bit of a cider twang in the background and a hint of strawberry. It's only been in the FV for a week or so but I am rather partial to the flavours in there. I was trying to do something that my wife might like as she isn't a beer fan but is a ginger beer fan. I'm not sure whether in not this will be her thing - it's definitely gingery but is nothing like her preferred choice of Crabbies. I will have to wait and see!
