Hi!
I'm not an AG brewer (for now) BUT every brewry I've been to in the English speaking world have called it 'spent grain ' :)

A fair few of them sell/give it to farmers or feed merchants for feeding to horses/cattle... So cattle food may also fit the purpose :D

When i steep grains for my extract brews I put the grains in the compost or leave them out for the birds...

They may make short work of a kilo or so of grains leaving only the husks behind...

OOI what do you AG guys do with your 'spent grains' ?

:)

I call it chicken food. Used to chuck it all in the compost bin 'til I found out a guy down the road keeps chickens. One day I piled it all into some of those zip-seal plastic bags and instructed the missus to go see if he wanted it for the chickens (it was a good excuse for her to get to know the locals as we hadn't been here that long!). He was very grateful and said they went berserk for it. So each brewday now comes with half a dozen eggs in exchange. Now what can I do with the spent hops...?

I freecycled my spent grain.

Now I have a regular who comes and collects the grain for their chickens.

I give mine to a colleague who keeps pigs, apparently they go nuts for it when it's a few days old and smelling funky. I once left it in a sealed plastic bag overnight, and the next day the bag was bubbling and had inflated like a balloon, and was warm too. There was definitely some wild yeast or bacteria or something in there, it smelled pretty funky.

I dumped at least two sack of spent grains on my compost pile this winter, when it thawed a few weeks ago the thing started smoking like a Mad Max film set. Now the neighbors want a tun.

Cheers, Bill
