Barnsley Bitter

Post by john1967 » Tue Mar 18, 2008 9:58 am

Hi All,
Has anybody brewed a close match to Barnsley bitter, or near to it?
Also, where is the best place to get liquid yeast and how do you keep it alive for a few brews once you've purchased it?
Appreciate any replys!!

Hop and Grape do a good range of the Whitelabs yeasts, they do mail order from their website, when you recieve it just bung the vial in the fridge.

They will split easily five or six ways maybe more making it cheaper than using dried packet yeast. Just make a starter with 200g of dried spraymalt and 2 litres of cool boiled water in a sanitised airlocked demi-john, when nearly fermented out split into 5 or 6 sanitised 500ml pop bottles and keep them in the fridge until you need them.

I just tried this for the first time and have already gotten two brews out of my White Labs Eng Ale vial. I have 3 more bottles, too. Much easier even than it sounds, actually.

The only recipe I have for Barnsley Bitter (Apart from my own beer :D, and I can't imagine you wanting that ;) ) is for Courage Barnsley Bitter which was brewed at the Oak Well brewery, which ceased production in 1974. I know there is a Barnsley Brewery in production, but know little about it . . . A fellow brewer has acquired some of their pump badges for me, and they do look good on the hand pump . Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately . . . for them) I am nothing to do with the brewery . . . . . However, I've been slowly tracing back the family history and our branch of the Barnsleys did have a brewery in the midlands around the 1800's . . . Could say it in the blood I guesd :D

Hi Aleman
Is it the Dave Line one that you have?
The Acorn Brewery that does Barnsley Bitter now is a mile from my house, can't see them letting me know the recipe!

I was looking back on some of mine I posted in 2007 when I was 'Jimberbob', I was boiling in plastic buckets back then and shiney was a distant dream :) . Couldn't remember my old pass word or email so ended up setting up a new account.
It's frightening where the time goes.

Any chance someone could recommend a bitter recipe please ?

My dad is coming home in a couple of months and he hate's anything "fruity" i.e. Ipa's. Say's he love's bank's bitter [-X So I want to brew something nice for him.

Also what is the conditioning time for a bitter ? My ipa's are being drunk a week after kegging, I assume its longer with a bitter ?

Thanks

You should have emailed me. I could have reset the p/w on your old account.

I know I can brew an half decent pint but one of my brewing goals is to brew Barnsley Bitter like Stancils Brewery does... It was until recently brewing on the old Oakwell site where the original brewery stood for over an hundred years.
