water to grain ratio??

Post by beer gut » Sat Oct 17, 2009 9:32 pm

Hi everyone i have a question to ask all the experianced grain brewers. My question is how much water to 1kg of grain for mashing, i was first told 1kg of grain to 1.5 litres of water, as i found today with great stress and my last two other brews,1kg of grain to 1.5 liters is not enough. Iwas then told 2 liters of water to 1kg of grain from my home brew supplier. Finally i read in the Graham Wheeler british real ale brewing book he uses 2.5 liters to 1kg of grain in his recipe's.So i ask everyone which one do you think is right? if any. :? :? :?

2.5 for me too....it makes the maths easy.
4kg=10L and so on :)

From my fraught experiences:
2.5 litres per 1 kilo of grain for the mash
1 litre per kilo + mash tun dead space for the top up

Can I point you to this excellent reply to a similar question I asked the other week...

2.5:1 for Me too unless I'm cramming in loads of extra grain.

Hi everyone and thanx for your reply's and addvice.I did a brew yesterday with the first water to grain ratio 1kg to 1.5 liters of water.Let's say it was the worst day of brewing known to man, i had two grain bags and both burnt to my kettle elment luckly i always watch my mash closley the elment is fine and my kettle works fine, but the stress caus i did not know what was wrong. In the end we saved the brew using the old method but that is why i brought the water to ratio to grain question ti the forum caus i knew that must be the problem.I will from now on use your 2.5 liters to 1kg of grain in my mashing.With king regaurds beer gut. :D :D
