how's my crush?...

Post by punt1971 » Tue Apr 22, 2014 9:54 am

Got my grain mill set up over the weekend ready for my next AG.

How does my crush look?

There's some flour, a little less than when I buy pre-crushed grain. Also, there are no uncracked grains.

Any thoughts?

It looks a little coarse.

Generally you would like your crush to be:
15-30% husk material
20-25% coarse grits
50-60% flour/fine grits

For me the crush would also be a little coarse. But its also a case of what you want.

A very fine , floury crush will probably give better efficiency but it can also be tricky to mash and sparge on some rigs.

Same vice versa. I would for example prefer a rougher crush when brewing a wheat beer etc.

I would Like more flour than that while maintaining the whole husks. Quite a bit of the kernel looks to still stuck inside the husk. Upper left at about 10 o'clock there are three grains where only the tip has been broken off.

How many mm is the roller gap set at and what malt is it?
