John Smiths Recipe
Re: John Smiths Recipe
Slowly slowy catchy monkey.
The whole family were here yesterday for a collosal Sunday lunch.
I had spent most of Saturday getting the Brew House into 'visitor mode' with an array of home brew on display as well as a good selection of Brew Dog, TTL, etc.
"I've got some really interesting beers on the shelf at the moment Colin. Do you want to be a bit adventurous and try something different?"
"Thanks mate, but I brought along some John Smith's just in case". Really!!! WTF! I have to say that I honestly cannot believe how a beer drinker would not want to try a bottle of something new and different. It is not as if if has to buy a barrel of the stuff. Just one harmless frigging bottle of IPA. It felt as if was trying to convert the Pope.
I then sowed the seed that some clever brewer on the forum had dug out the original recipe for John Smith's and we should brew it together. I could sense a flicker of distrust behind the look of interest, but at least the seed has been sown.
What started out as 'It would be a nice thing to do' has now turned into a life mission. I don't care how long it takes. We WILL be brewing a beer that he prefers to John Smith's. If I can't do that, I will hang up my hydro for good and go back to the allotment.
I will let you know.

Re: John Smiths Recipe
I'd have abandoned the brew day, bought a single bottle of JS, poured the contents down the drain (where it belongs), sterilised the bottle and used it when bottling one of your own brews!
Next time round make sure he sees you open that bottle and see what reaction you get when he (finally) tastes something decent!

Re: John Smiths Recipe
Sounds like you are 'casting pearls before swine', could well be a fruitless endeavor.

Watch the hop levels on those old Dave Line recipes......
Hop IBUs are much higher than in the 1970s

Re: John Smiths Recipe
I remember buying kits from Boots late 70s early 80s and every time I went, there was what appeared to be exactly the same few 'Goldings Hops' on the shelf in clear, flimsy plastic bags in glaring fluorescent light and high temps. Most likely good for absolutely nothing. How times have changed.dcq1974 wrote:Watch the hop levels on those old Dave Line recipes......

Re: John Smiths Recipe
I remember those hops well, so dry that the slightest touch they would turn to dust .
I buy my grain & hops from here http://www.homebrewkent.co.uk/

An admirable endeavour...you've a lot more patience than I.
