Re: Pure hop aroma oils
I bought some of the citra oil on a whim. I thought I'd try it out this evening by revitalising an old ipa with a couple of drops in a pint. Accidentally put three drops in.
Holy moly! That's hops.
Reckon I added about 0.095ml (as there's about 16 drops in 0.5ml), which is equivalent to about 2ml in 10 litres.

I did the same after reading this thread. Used 5 drops in a pint. Let's just say it was a learning experience.Jocky wrote:I bought some of the citra oil on a whim. I thought I'd try it out this evening by revitalising an old ipa with a couple of drops in a pint. Accidentally put three drops in.

In what way?
I found the aroma given off was less citra fruity, and more of a green, intense herbal attack.
5 drops would have been a bit much.

Massive overkill. I like a big hop flavour but that was way too much for 3/4 pint.
I agree with you on the flavour - intense herbal, some piney but not the big soft fruity flavour i've had from citra when using whole hops. It's not unpleasant (if dosed correctly), just not the same as a citra dry hop.

I wouldn’t fancy using it directly in a glass of beer.
In a keg, then leave 24 hrs and its good stuff.
I haven’t used the Citra yet, so I can’t comment on that, but the Cascade is top stuff.
I’ll be using the Citra next week.

Re: Pure hop aroma oils
Taken the plunge and bought Citra and Cascade. Had a sniff and to be honest wasn't exactly blown away as I expected although, I suspect it needs to be in the beer to really take effect. As Jocky said the Citra aroma is 'grassy' and not quite what I expected.
Final brew for this year is a comparison test with Optic against MO so any proper use of this stuff will have to wait until 2017!

I tried one drop in a glass of Citra, followed by swirling and drinking straight away but it has a slightly harsh edge to it used this way. I think leaving it 24 hours is probably the way forward.Normski wrote:I wouldn’t fancy using it directly in a glass of beer.

Yes, I'm not writing them off from the glass sample - going to try dosing it into some old bottles of ipa so it can sit for 2-3 days before drinking.

It is any easy product to add to beer, but as with many of our specialty ingredients.
A bit of tweaking until it tastes just right for you. And you may find it a very useful tool.

So you don't stir or shake after adding the oil to a keg?

I don`t stir, I sit very still and if I don`t drink my Polish TC, I don`t shake at all!

Just as an update. I have now also tried the Citra Hop Oil.
I used it in a 6% Challenger bittered and Citra 15min and 5 min additions.
It was conditioned in a secondary then transferred 18.5L to a corny with 2 ml of Citra Hop Oil added.
It tastes great, very hoppy, great Citra flavor with loads of aroma.
Not a bit of grassiness.
It tasted good before the Oil, but with just 2ml it adds a lovely fresh aroma.
I tried some after 1 hr with the Oil, it was nice, but was smoother after 24hrs.
Dare I say, this is very Jarl like.
I’ll give some to woblylegs to evaluate; he’s quite fond of Jarl.
To sum up. I have tried the Cascade Oil many times and now have also tried the Citra and love them both.
I have a Nelson ale fermenting and will add Nelson Oil to that and report back.

Re: Pure hop aroma oils
Great. Thanks for the update Norm. I'm definitely going to get some of these ready for my hoppy summer ale brewing session. I've been wanting to get a hop spider for my BM but have been holding off as I didn't think it would hold enough hops.
With hop aroma oils I can cut down on the late hops and still get the hoppy aroma.
