more than expected efficiency

Post by Haydnexport » Sat Jan 21, 2017 1:55 am

I had a very small window this evening to finally test out my new gear, 100l hlt , 80l high end mt , 100l boiler, i used beersmith and 'calculated' the brew with the losses to deadspace etc i'd checked first , ill post what ive actually used and what ive got now.

50l strike water
17.5 kg pilsener malt
30l x 2 batch sparge
using 200g saaz fwh . 100g 10min and 100g flameout
and was looking for 1.050 sg at around 77l of wort

i have over 80l (i cba checking how much atm its late and im tired but not much more) , of 1.062 wort tested on 3 refractometers and 2 hydrometers :shock:

ive put the whole lot bar 15l(sort of starter) in the keezer at 1c in 2 different vessels. What would be best to do to bring the majority of the batch to 1.050 ish ? would boiled cooled tap water be ok or even bottled water? what sort of ratio would i be looking for? Would this effect the brew too much ?

Apologies if this is badly written and doesnt make much sense but i had a full work day then a full on scramble around trying to remember how to do everything :oops:

What's wrong with 1.062? Just make sure you reduce the alkalinity in the added water to 10 or less.

It's a bit on the strong side for me that , how would I reduce the alkalinity, what would I need to add ?

To keep it simple CRS Carbonate Reduction Solution), if you are serious about treating the water then in this case Sulphuric or Hydrochloric, depending on which ion you want to add sulphate or chloride.

I don't know if it is too late to mention this but you may want to consider boiling some hops with the water that you are going to use to dilute the wort.

The IBUs in the wort will already be a bit lower as the higher boil gravity will have slowed the release of alpha-acids. Then if you liquor back with plain water you will dilute the bitterness further.

I'm afraid I can't help with any calculations as to how many hops to add but it is something to consider.
