I'm going to be brewing a black IPA in a few weeks and was planning on cold steeping some Carafa 3 malt for the colour, about 3.5% of the total grist which is about 250g of malt. How much water would you steep this in and for how long?
Thanks.

When I did this I used about 1L of water and steeped overnight.

Lovely smell on the steeped water, like coffee and chocolate. I added it at the last 10 mins of the boil. Darker than what I was after and a little hazy. Next time I will boil longer as I'm sure that's why it was hazy. Taste wise it was spot on. Not harsh at all.

If you just want colour, then add the malt on top of the mash when you sparge (assuming you do of course). I wouldn't waste carafa if you want black. Use black malt instead or even Roast for a little flavour.

Can't be arsed to keep changing this bit, so, drinking some beer and wanting to brew many more!

Thanks for the help, i don't have any black malt in at the moment but do have the carafa that i bought especially for this so i'm going to stick with that, looking for the least amount of roast flavour possible with as much colour as possible. I'll go with what i have planned for now and maybe change next time if i feel it's needed.
