vanilla pods in milk stout

Post by Secla » Tue Apr 18, 2017 12:09 am

Just brewed a milk stout and was considering adding some vanilla post fermentation
Only problem is i dont tend to use a secondary ! primary ferment then cold crash and keg. what would be the best way of adding the vanilla ?

Infuse a little vodka with the vanilla for a day or two, then add to taste into the keg.

Surely you could just use good quality vanilla extract instead, it's basically the same thing that someone else has done, that's what i intended to do with a choco-vanilla porter i have planned for later in the year.

Or add to the glass when drinking, then you'll know how much is too much for your palate.

Not a bad idea ! MAy add some to glass and see how I like it and consider adding to a whole batch if I brew it again

Extract's have other ingriedients added.
Which may not be a problem if just adding to a glass of beer, But not a good idea if adding to a whole batch.
I use only the finest largest fatest Madegascan Grade A vanilla pods in my Ris.
I soak in my own over proof white rum for a few weeks. Then add to bottling bucket.

Where do you get the vanilla beans from ?
Probably to late for this brew but willing to give a go on the future. Also have some cacao nibs in my ingredients box

It used to be that ebay was the place to buy your vanilla pods from, cheap and direct from Madagascar. Dunno if that's still the case...

k1100t - Do you have any links to the sellers on ebay from Madagascar, I don't think I noticed any earlier today.

Not sure to be honest, looks like it's all importers these days. #-o
Some of the descriptions don't match the titles either...

Here's 20 Extract Grade Madagascan Vanilla Pods.

Sorry to disagree, But I wouldn’t use them. Even they describe them as small dry and brittle.
You wont get very much aroma out of them. Extract grade is not very high.
I believe the Bourbon Madagascan Grade A are about the highest quality.

Sorry I'm a bit confused, what does extract grade mean, the pod isn't as good as 'Bourbon Madagascan Grade A'?

Where did you get your pods from?
