I'm just going to do it

Post by snowbeast » Tue Sep 05, 2017 8:21 am

I haven't had much luck lately, my first ever brewpot was hit by hail and my second one was out in the garage after a brew day, had too many after brew drinks and drove my car right into everything.
Next excuse was I replaced nothing as the Mrs was offered jobs in either the UAE or Devon and I didn't feel like carting my stuff into the Northern Hemisphere.
We now live in the Central Drakensberg, KZN, South Africa with the most amazing water that comes from 120m underground and very little people above us to pollute it.
I'm going to do a brew with what I have.

Plan is to use a 10l stock pot to brew as SMASH Ale.
2.5kg American Pale Ale Malt
25g Cascade @60mins
15g Cascade @0mins (No Chill Method)
Safale US-05

Might taste a bit rough. IBU says 45ish, but no chill method always goes a little higher.
I just need to start again and get going.
My Pops and I live on the same 50acre plot and he is keen to go halvies on a small setup.
I'm gonna do it tonight on my stove top, mini BIAB way, just like the Aussies.

Love to hear some constructive criticism.

Sounds idyllic.

Is a 10L pot big enough for what you're doing? Doesn't sound a lot of space for the runnings from 2.5Kg of grain to me, but maybe you're just sparging to volume and not worrying about it. EDIT - Just seen you're doing mini-biab    I might be tempted to put more of the cascade in towards the end and less at the start, but I've never no-chilled, so maybe you know something I don't there. Have fun anyway.

All seems fine.
It's sitting in the fermenter. Looks as if I got 8-9l out of it.
once I pulled the grain bag out I used warm water to "sparge it into a bucket and used it to top up.
I have 50g Cascade so I did 15g @60 15g @0 remembering i don't have anything to cool it with and possibly 20g dry hop seems as though it is a SMASH.
Not scientific, but hope it makes good beer.
