Forgot the Protofloc

Post by Rubbery » Tue Sep 19, 2017 4:49 pm

Help! I forgot the Protofloc and have 23L of murky chilled sweet wort

Any suggestions as to what I can do to save the beer? 8-[

I don't want to boil again as that will cause more problems with IBUs and late hops. I would rather start again.

Fret not!

Press on and make your beer.

Many people don't use protofloc.

I think it helps with the hot break, but your beer will still be fine.

When I left out protafloc it just took longer to clear. Not a problem unless you enter it in a competition too soon.
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

If i had a pound for everytime i forgot the protofloc......well i would probably have about £10 :)

Anyway when i have forgot it the beer has turned out fine not always the clearest but of course it still tastes the same :)

So dont panic carry on, ferment and then drink :)

Rubbery,
Try Gelatine / Finings 24hrs before bottling to clear the beer.

I've done it before.. Ferment it out and it'll taste fine, but mine always kept an haze.
Not done it since, got "PROTOFLOC" in bold writing above the boiler..lol :D

We've all probably done it some time in our brewing career, it's been my favourite Hillbillyism! Don't worry, it will be fine. As already mentioned, it may take a little longer to clear & still have a slight haze, but it won't affect the taste of the finished brew.

Thanks all,

It was not too murky going into the FV, so I have high hopes. It's bubbling away nicely now. I may try the gelatine suggestion if I have have fridge space to crash cool it.
