Hi all,
I usually purchase my brewing ingredients from online supplier no1, and find that I get a total efficiency of 70% in beersmith. I maybe 1 point low on my OG now and again after the boil but usually I am spot on.
Recently I have started to buy grains from another major online supplier, no2, and I now find I am low on my OG by about 5-6 points after the boil. To get round this I have to reduce my beer smith from 70 to 65.
I brew with a braumeister 20L.
Any thoughts? Anyone else found this? The thing is, supplier no2 has a far better delivery service :-/
I have brewed the same beer using the same kit and followed my usually procedure.

Get your own grain mill would be my advice Otherwise just use more grain if you want to stick with the supplier who has the better delivery service

Are you buying the same grain from both suppliers? In other words, do both sell Fawcett's or Crisp or whatever you usually use?

Is it the same malt from the same Maltser ?
Are you buying in bulk?
Are you buying in small 1kg bags?
Precrushed?
Also if precrushed, you might want to consider whether the supplier is milling on site, and what their crush size is.

If you've only done a couple of brews you could find efficiency improves. The sack may have been transported vertically; more flour would have got shaken down and you've been brewing with more husks from the top half

I noticed a difference in crushed malts between 2 of the main suppliers, needless to say I use the MM for all my grain now.

You need to know what the specification is for the malt before you have any idea of whether a difference is down to the malt or not. Malt varies season by season and maltster from maltster. All maltsters will supply a spec to the retailer so ask them for it.
