Weight of a single Campden Tablet

Post by MashTim » Sat Nov 18, 2017 9:17 pm

Any one know the weight of a single Campden Tablet? I have the powder and could do with knowing how much I need to treat brew water.

Being the helpful sort, I've just weighed some, and one tablet is half a gram.

I suspect though, that CTs have some additional filler, so it may not be a direct read across to the powder. For what it is worth, I use the powder too for knocking out chlorine, and I just go with an imperial pinch.

They contain 0.44g of sodium metabisulfite plus some sort of filler needed to make it a tablet, the powder like jack said may be pure.

Another thing you can do is to weigh 20, 40, 50, 60, or some high number and then divide by the number of tablets -- that will give you a good average per tablet.

I suppose I would have lost marks for not showing my working out.

But yes, I weighed 10 of them and divided!

Hi,
if you make a 10% solution with your metabisulphite powder, you can use this instead of the tablets.
5ml of this 10% solution is roughly equal to 1 Campden tablet.
1 Campden tablet treats approx 76L of water. (20 US gallons. 1US gallon=3.785L)
When I weighed my Campden tabs, they averaged out at 426mg per tablet.

I have just checked the individual weight of Wilko's Camden tablets and they weigh between 0.73 and 0.76 grams. So that is 50% more than has been suggested. The scales I used are accurate to two decimal places.

There’s always someone to throw the car amongst the pidgins!

I like the scientific approach to making a solution, just need to find a spec sheet for the powder brand I have.

You might like one of these to weigh it

There is a difference between displaying mass to two decimal places and being accurate to two d.p.

Shall we see how long we can keep this thread going?

I'll be the Percy Pedant who points out that, although the scales use units of mass what they actually measure is the gravity force acting on the mass, that is weight.
