Kolsch help please
Worried about nothing again (recent Have I been sold a pup post) as down from 1045 to 1010 after 7 days. Almost crystal clear and aroma and test taste don't dissapoint.
Have just raised to 18C for the D rest and intend moving to secondary tomorrow night. I am going to 'lager' this so intend dropping to 2C and leaving for a straight 3 weeks.
Does that sound about right and should it be a straight drop to 2C from 18C or in stages?

Just drop it some will tell you to do it in stages but you wont be able to taste the difference.

The only potential issue with dropping straight down to 2*C is the FV imploding. I chill mine, after a week or two in secondary, for a few days before transferring to a keg for lagering.

What on earth are you fermenting in? If you use an air lock air will be sucked in to the FV and I've never seen a bucket that was actually so well sealed that you could pull a vacuum in it.FV imploding
You must have better kit than I do

I use BetterBottles for secondaries. An example of an imploding FV about 2:10 in the following...

BetterBottles, I though you had better kit than me.
Are you in the US? Those things are not common in the UK.

Very strange video! I only watched it around the 2 minute bit to see the imploding FV. I didn't know crash cooling dropped chill haze out. I thought cooling caused chill haze. Ah well, live and learn.
Plus there must have been a huge inrush of air when the top was loosened, unless he somehow used CO2 to equalise the pressure.

Low temperature precipitates haze proteins then gravity promotes sedimentation, especially if something like gelatine is addedguypettigrew wrote: ↑Wed Jan 24, 2018 10:12 pmVery strange video! Re: Kolsch help please
Interesting vid. Had to buy a new fermenter as my secondary is currently tied-up with an IPA. Should have checked it first I suppose as when I've come to transfer the Kolsch back to the fridge, not enough room to get an air lock back on. Going to cover the breather with a lint cloth doused in steriliser - will keep damp but not enough to have it drip - the fridge itself is sterilised whenever a new brew goes in plus gets a liberal spraying every few days. Should be OK - I hope!

Re: Kolsch help please
I can't get a bubbler on mine either so I use a blow off tube. As you cool, it will just lift some fluid back up the tube. If you are really worried, just pipe the blow off from your IPA through the kolsch until it's at a steady 2 degC.
