say if I had just done a brew and only fermented it once, is there a way (appart from secondery fermentation) of getting gas into the beer?

yes, forced conditioning under pressure, for which you need a regulated co2 supply and at the bargain basement end of the scale pet bottles and a carbonation cap (SS (china) or plastic (US) pet bottle top with corny gas in post and dip tube) or Kegs at the top end of the scale..
check the dispensing section for a sticky post containing a kegging chart which tabulates optimum pressure/temp to achieve specific conditioning levels. beer left and maintained at the pressures and temps listed in the chart for 7-10 days should have achieved the target condition level, agitating/shaking the bottle will speed things up, as will applying excess pressure. applying higher pressure to speed up conditioning will probably result in a off target level of condition tho.
