Gave up? Was it cost? Taste? Or just decided not to?

  1. No Chloramine in my supply
  2. Most Chlorine expelled during heating to strike temperature
  3. One step removed from the brewing process
  4. No perceived effect on taste or smell
  5. Save a quid over a couple of years

About 40 years after first brewing with lots to learn, I read that chlorine in water supplies caused problems. Campden Tablets were the answer and worked in an instant. Buying a pack, they were used every brew until I forgot. A while past before the warning again did the rounds, and the tub had sat there collecting dust. It will still be there with at least 10 years more dust.

Obviously some brewers suffer from this problem, but I'll suggest chlorine gets a lot of blame for problems it hasn't caused.

The Hanna alkalinity checker I use can, apparently, give wrong readings if there is chlorine in the water.

So the brewing water is run into the HLT the day before brewing and left with the top off.

No idea if it really matters, but it's no hardship.
