AG#28 - Fuggles Ale

Post by floydmeddler » Sat Feb 27, 2010 7:14 pm

Right... I'm still on my one hop brew quest. Here's what I've got brewing at the minute. Idea was to get it started early. Started at around 2:30pm with a NASTY hangover. Had a beer to bring me round and fell asleep. Mashed for around 2 1/2 hours. #-o Hopefully it won't result in a thin beer. Temp stayed at 67c throughout.

Yep I know. Wouldn't normally use this much but GW recipe for Sarah Hughes got me all inspired. He uses quite a lot.

Looking forward to this one! :D

try the pendle witches brew from GW if you're after an all fuggles drink.
that was pretty good in my book.

OK. Took a sip and not very hoppy at all. As I've never brewed an all Fuggles ale before, what sorts of hoppy flavours should I experience with 60g in for 90 mins and 40g in for 15mins?

Cheers.

Is it still in the FV?
Give it time in the bottle / keg, I'm sure it will improve. :)

Yep. Still in the FV. Not saying I dislike it, just not as hoppy as the other one hop brews I've done. Time will tell.

Damn this is a top pint. For such a simple recipe the flavours are really complex. I find it super delicious at room temperature. It has a serious deep fruitiness to it - almost cherry like. Strange as I only used s-04 and brewed at 18c-20c. Perhaps it's the Fuggles and high crystal content together? Will definitely brew this again.

Sounds good :) I'll have to do something similar and uncomplicated :) which is easier said than done, I always seem to complicate my recipes :)

This sounds like one to try, I do like a hoppy beer, if you could what would you compare it too?

Im trying a clone brew every weekend before i go offshore thus far ive done Deuchers IPA two weeks ago, Summer lightning last weekend, this weekend Abbot Ale, next week maybe this Fuggles Ale... :D

Not sure escapism. I think Northern Brewer or Williamette are considered decent substitutes but I can't really say sorry.

Progress & Willamette I've read but I've had no experience of either.

By pure coincidence I've chosen to do my own EPA recipe very similar to this one. Only differences are I'm using Flaked Barley and Nottingham Ale yeast. + I'm only brewing about 1 gallon as a test.

1kg Maris Otter Pale Malt Crushed
100g Crystal Malt Low Colour (100) Crushed
50g Flaked Barley 1kg (for head retension and body)
Fuggles Leaf Hops 30 gms approx (10g bitter, 10g flavor, 10+g aroma)
Danstar Nottingham Beer Yeast

I hope it turns out as good as yours.
