80/- Export + 80 Zolti Import

Post by mixbrewery » Sun May 02, 2010 10:21 am

Another first for today was doing two beers in one session!
Used the same grist to get 75lt of wort but then split into 50 & 25 lt batches so different hops and yeast could be used.
Had assistant brewer, #1 son, helping and hence the reason for the extra 25lt batch as he wanted "his own beer".

80/- Export & 80 Zolti Import

Batch Size (L): 75.00 Wort Size (L): 75.00
Total Grain (kg): 14.63
Actual OG: 1.046
Anticipated EBC: 35.1
Anticipated IBU: 22.9

Grain
% Amount Name Origin Potential EBC
91.3 13.35 kg. Pale Malt(2-row) Great Britain 1.038 5
5.1 0.75 kg. Torrefied Wheat UK 1.036 3
3.6 0.52 kg. Roasted Barley Great Britain 1.029 1133

Then split into two batches for boiling and fermentation.

Batch 1 - 50ltr

Hops
Amount Name Alpha IBU Boil Time
120.00 g. Goldings - E.K. 3.36 21.7 75 min.
25.00 g. Bramling Cross 4.50 1.1 0 min.

Extras - 2 Whirlfloc @ 15min.

Yeast - White Labs WLP028 Edinburgh Ale

Batch 2 - 25 ltr

Hops
Amount Name Alpha IBU Boil Time
25.00 g. Progress 5.30 14.3 75 min.
25.00 g. Lubelski or Lublin 3.70 7.0 30 min.
12.00 g. Lubelski or Lublin 3.70 0.9 0 min.
8.00 g. Progress 5.30 0.8 0 min.

Extras - 2 Whirlfloc @ 15min.

Yeast - Danstar Nottingham

The main batch went to plan as it was using all the usual kit.
Problems started with the small batch using my old plastic setup.
1 - forget to use a hop strainer #-o eventually strained with a nylon hop bag, but got all the cold break in the bottom.
2 - how was i going to cool after the boil #-o emergency immersion coil made up while the boil was going, not the prettiest but did the job.
3 - no temp control for fermentation #-o now where did i put the old brew belt heaters, got two somewhere ?

Both are now fermenting fine and hopefully the small batch will be ok after a lack of planning led to the cockups. [-o<
