The Pharsical Phemto Brewairy shakedown. Sour and Bent.

4kg PM, 175gms each of Crystal, Barley, Wheat
70gms Fuggles, 90mins
30gms Styrian Goldings, 15 mins
22l, 1.046, 4.5%, 40EBU, 15EBC.

RIMsing at the start of the mash, somewhat murky
Image

The hysteresis and thermal inertial of the "Jam Maker" is about 2.5C, so I had to add a PID:
Image

RIMsing near the end of mash, much clearer:
Image

Add first sparge, 5l. Because it is going to be stirred, you can just pour it in:
Image

Increase mash tun to 77C for mashout:
Image

Starting wort from first sparge:
Image

Second sparge water addition:
Image

Adding second sparge to boiler:
Image

During re-circulation cooling. This took nearly 45 minutes as the ground water is 21C:
Image

After a 60 minute wait at 25C, first runnings to FV
Image

The OG is somewhat high, I had to add nearly 5l to get it back to 1.046:
Image

But the wort is very clear, and most of the trub and break is left in the boiler, not exactly a "cone" but it seems to work quite well.
Image

Things to iron out:
There is a temperature variation within the mash tun. As you would expect, about 1-1.5C less at the sides. This will be improved with some Armaflex. For this run it did not matter as I gave the mash a stir every so often.

Pumping the mash tun into the boiler is far too fast, it leaves 2-3l of wort in the wet spent grist, but it is easy to gravity drain this out into a jug and then add it to the boiler.

The hop filters are a bit too small, after re-circulating for 45 minutes, they are somewhat blocked and boiler draining needs to be pumped.

Very nice and very small.I had to look twice to get what i was seeing! What was the driver behind a 2nd brewery? Are you playing one up with the neighbours?

Hi Pants - are you back yet? - I seem to lose track........

The ideas are mainly over in equipment: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=34063

The practical reasons are that I've got a dedicated room which stays at 21+/- 1C but if I use it to brew, the FVs get too hot.
(This will only be the case for the summer, after which the under-floor heating will come into use again.)
The fridge, freezer and fridge-freezer (all in the garage) are full with 12 cornies.
I now have something which will go in an -estate- car, to lend out.

The less practical reasons include:
To try the pumps and jam makers
Each bit is cheap (although the total is ~£170)
To try a directly heated mash tun
I had a "spare" PID and heat exchanger
Because a lot here have taken the Lidls back (easy fix in another thread)
Even if it didn't work I've got three Sous Vide cookers (that'll make five then... )

But most of all, for the shear hell of it

I am loving this set up fuggled when you say "£170" is that for everything 2 pumps, 3 boilers, copper, etc, etc.

And I take it you are a sparky/plumber

Hi Rimski - one of my inspirations!
3x Lidl Jam Maker - £39.95 each
2x Pumps + connections - £55.50 total ( but you only need two for a two-brew-day)
1/4" Silicone tube - about £5 for 2.5m
2x 10mm JG - £1.79 each
So that's actually £184 I spent.

I had all the rest kicking about, but you would need to add:
stand - Not Speedframe!
10mm cu pipe - about £5
PID + probe - maybe about £65 total inc. box, but I am fairly sure you could make beer using the Lidl's thermostat and stirring.
2x power supply for pumps - about £3 each
bit of 22 guage SS mesh
some sort of cooler + fittings, a big drop in one would probably displace too much wort.
thermometer - that one was about £17 I think, but you could use the PID with it's probe instead.

You could save on a Jam Maker if you warmed the sparge water in the boiler, using a FV as an "underback".

I am a semi-retired electronics idiot who can solder copper!

What kind of power supply are you using I have a pump on order and I found this on ebay

Of course if I can get a car battery off of a mate for free I will go with that 8)

I can't find the exact one, and they probably cost a bit more now, but they will have come from CPC:
http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/search/brows ... 137+500001
There are some fixed 12V 500mA ones there for £2.34. The pumps takes a nominal 550mA but most people seem to be getting away with this.
I would probably choose these: http://cpc.farnell.com/_/mws1928gs-uk/a ... dp/PW01890

Of course, you would be stuffed with delivery and minimum order charges if you can't get a big enough order together....

If you do not want to vary the speed, go for an old car battery - it can be almost completely knacked and still give the current needed for one of these pumps! - and if you could find one with external cell links, you could have 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12V.

Nah, still in Baku. Getting onshore on Friday so a few beers in the red lion and then fly home Saturday or Sunday.

 Love the reasons especially a brewery to lend out, that's just class in so many ways.

The best reason by far! I read the thread linked and its great, kind of reminds me in a strange way of those minature pottery sculpture things that grannies love(this is a compliment, honest).

Interesting, The Red Lion...
I don't much fancy the "Boulevard where you can make your daily jogging", but the blond with the big smile in the "king size beds and all the necessary facilities" is obviously from "Reception is available 24 hours a day to... satisfy any other special needs" - hum....

The bar looks a bit boring, but I see you left your flag their last time

Ther's a barmaid there with the most massive assets(apparently) and the beer of choice is Efes or green label carlsberg. Not exactly shaking the pillars of microbrew sampling with those choices but needs must when its all you can get. Not kidding about satisfying other needs. Apparently its all there if you just ask. I'll stick to the pool table and no jogging for me either . Meant to ask, how many finished pints do you expect to get out of a brew on this one? P.S White star IPA will be on its way to you next week along with some Vulcan IPA. Vulcans ready once settled and white star is just starting to age so it'll be a while.

Maybe 36 pints with a following wind, I reckoned on a corny and a couple of spare ones...
I hope my previous efforts don't make your return a loose one.....

I think i'll chill one down and try it Saturday night. Any particular recommendations sir? I'll do a side by side with my white star which i've got to try as its custom now to strip the enamel from my teeth with my IPA's early. That puts me off going back to them for another couple of months. Must be a dental survival machanism. 36 pints is a nice brew length, it'll let you get lots of trial brews in. Very impressive clear wort.

My best recommendation is that Sir removes the cap before throwing down the throat.
Also pouring directly down the gullet will avoid the aforementioned teeth.
If you don't like drinking mud, don't cool them too much - I haven't got chill haze under control yet....
