Crisp Malt trial - Growling Bobelicious

Post by GrowlingDogBeer » Sun Dec 04, 2011 1:35 pm

Today I am doing my first Brew using the Crisp Maltings Pale Malt as supplied by The MaltMiller.

I am sticking with a fairly standard grain bill for me, the only difference being I am using Crisp Malting Pale Malt, instead of Fawcetts Maris Otter.

Growling Bobelicious

Original Gravity (OG): 1.050 (°P): 12.4
Final Gravity (FG): 1.013 (°P): 3.3
Alcohol (ABV): 4.91 %
Colour (SRM): 6.0 (EBC): 11.8
Bitterness (IBU): 37.1 (Average)

72.73% Pale Malt
9.09% Caramalt
9.09% Oat Malt
9.09% Wheat Malt

2 g/L Bobek (4.5% Alpha) @ 60 Minutes (Boil)
2 g/L Bobek (4.5% Alpha) @ 10 Minutes (Boil)
2 g/L Bobek (4.5% Alpha) @ 5 Minutes (Boil)
2 g/L Bobek (4.5% Alpha) @ 1 Minutes (Boil)
3 g/L Bobek (4.5% Alpha) @ 0 Minutes (Aroma)

Lots and lots of Bobek in this to give something with a bit of zing to start the New Year with.

So far the Mash is on, what have I found so far.

Initial impression is that the Malt looked a bit more floury than Maris Otter, this was evident when I got the Mash underway as after underletting as normal there were more dough balls than usual so a bit extra stirring was required.

I will update as the brewday progresses.

I hope so. I've had an all Bobek brew before, can't remember who it was by, It was a real monster of hoppiness and one of the best beers I've ever had.

If I can get anywhere close I'll be very happy. I'm just hoping I'm not going a bit overboard with them though.

I'm not sure how I'm going to use mine, I find Bobek to be a bit too full-on for me.
I did this http://pdtnc.wordpress.com/2010/07/04/a ... inute-ipa/ which was a bit mental, the flavour stays for ever and even months after bottling it was still in-yer-face, it eventually mellowed to a point where I could drink it. Nothing wrong with it, just not to my tastes.

Looking good Steve! I have some of that malt coming from Rob MaltMiller on monday, also some 'stella' hops. If they get here in time it'll be these two as an IPA of about 45 IBU with magnum bittering hops (expensive are stellas, but high octane at 15.6 AA! Perhaps I oughta do a smash with them to show the malt and the hops?

Is'nt Timmy Taylor a bobek hop these days? Thats a proper pint. Yours looks like a refreshing hoppy beer, what yeast will you use?

Very interested to see how the Crisp works out, at that price it's extremely tempting.

Good luck with it Steve

Hi Gary,

I tend to target just the same as you.

I CRS'd the water to give me 50 ppm for this brew.

OK, an update, sorry not too many pics.

I had a brew length of 50 Litres as I wanted to fill 2 cornies and knew I would lose a fair bit of wort to the hops, 550g in total in there.

Here are said hops ready to go in the boil

Image

Someone was asking me about my gas setup for the boiler, so while the boil was underway I took a couple of piccies

Heres the reg I use attached to a bottle of Propane. It's a 50mbar 1.5L per hour reg.

Image

Heres the burner in full flow. It's this one http://www.gasproducts.co.uk/acatalog/L ... _Ring.html

Image

I got a lovely clear wort, and it came in at 1.054, which is 4 points above target. This gives me 81% efficiency compared to my normal of 75%

Image

And the remnants of all them hops in the boiler

Image

So far I've been happy with the Malt. I have got a much better efficiency than ever before, was this down to the Malt or down to the fact I didn't use my normal Gypsum and Epsom Salts additions to the Mash. We will never know, the mash pH was spot on 5.2.

The wort is crystal clear, I used one Protofloc tablet in the 50 Litres.

It smells wonderful, all them lovely hops.

I used US-05 on this one. I didn't get time to get a starter going for anything else, but I think US-05 will do a good job of this. I have plenty of time to get the yeast to drop by cooling it, as I haven't any keg space available at the moment.

Another bobek fan here, although never seen anything like that concentration of them.

Amazingly clear wort and am always jealous of that spoon when I see it
